Animals - Review
This album may not be the best they ever made but it deserves a little more credit than it was given when it came out. When I bought it I couldn't stop hearing it and I was very happy to see that the critics were wrong about it because it was one hell of a good album. Of course it was not the perfect album to be played on the radio since three tracks were very long and the other two were very short, and it had to be a follow up to the two best albums of Pink Floyd, Dark side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here so it was kind of normal that it didn't had much success.
But besides all that, Animals was the beginning of a new pink Floyd style. More based on the playing of Gilmour than on the playing of Wright. Animals has a new pop beat never seen on their albums before. It is composed by five tracks, Pigs on the Wing 1, Dogs, Pigs - Three different Ones, Sheep and Pigs on the Wing 2. As it was becoming usual, Roger was the one that made all the lyrics and in this album he described the society dividing it into three groups, the dogs who are the powerful and oppressive, partly because they are taught that way, but in the end they end up all alone. The pigs who are the opportunists, always looking for a chance to get a few steps higher, always waiting to stick a knife in somebody's back. And the sheep that are the normal people oppressed by the dogs and mainly by the pigs.
In the musical aspect, I have to think that the album is well structured and they all played well on it. It starts with the small song Pigs on the Wing that gives us the introduction to the CD; than comes the Dogs, witch for me is the best track on the album. I love the solos made by Gilmour and the end when he starts singing "Who was born in a house full of pain...". This track is in my top ten tracks of all the Pink Floyd albums. Following it comes the Pigs - Three different ones witch is where we can see the new pop beat they gave to their songs, this song is very catchy and it has some very good lyrics like the rest of the songs has. Sheep is the forth song and for me its the second best song on this album. When I first heard it I thought it was very weird, I still think that but I like it a lot. And to complete, Pigs on the Wing 2, witch is the conclusion to the first track lyrics. Actually they made a version where these two songs were together on one.
I think its a must have album but its not their best work, I rate it with a:
