The Band Members

David Gilmour
David Gilmour was born March 6th, 1946. He is the youngest member of Pink Floyd, and joined the group last. He was brought in to cover for Syd Barrett after he was formaly asked to leave the group. Originally Syd was asked to do the writing for the group while Gilmour played all the music, but that didn't work well and Gilmour was brought in full time. Gilmour was a friend of the bands, as well as an established guitarist for the group "Jokers Wild". When Dave was new in the group, he wrote some music and a few songs, but with Roger Waters wanting to take control of the group his writing was brought to a stop. Since Gilmour was only the guitarist in the band, he did that very well. He is one of the most respected guitarist in Rock History, and well deserves it. Even during Waters lead of the band, Gilmour did all the guitar for Floyd, but most noticably songs like One of These Days, a solo part in the album Meddle; Shine On You Crazy Diamond, a long piece on Wish You Were Here; and Several Peices off the Wall. During the time Roger Waters was writing The Wall, Gilmour released a solo album, name after himself, David Gilmour. After Waters split after the Final Cut, Gilmour and Mason kept going. Few people thought that Pink Floyd could shine on without Waters, but with Mason, and help from Wright, Pink Floyd released A Momentary Lapse of Reason, this album sold very well and reached #3 on the Pop Charts, and stays at #1 on the USA CD Charts. During the seven year period which Pink Floyd didn't release anything, Gilmour releases a solo album, About Face. Both solo albums did well. Being in the top 50.
In 1994 Gilmour, Mason, and reunited Wright, released a chart topping album. The Division Bell reached #1 on the US charts and stayed for a few weeks. With the Floyd Spirit alive again, Pink Floyd went on and released the live album P-U-L-S-E.
Roger Waters
Roger Waters was Born on September 9th 1943. And Was a friend of Barrett's throught life. Waters joined the group in 1965, as it was called the Abdads. Waters did alot of the vocals and minor writing during the Barrett era. But when Syd left the Band, Waters started to tke control of most the writing. By the time of Darkside of the Moon, Waters did all the writing and almost all of the music. Although his earlier albums weren't commercial success, and didin't sell as much as he wanted, he kept the same style of music, and up untill Dark Side was released, Waters never tasted the fame that he wanted to. Waters kept his role in the group as the singer, song writer, and music writer, and only got more demanding of the other Floyd member to do what he wanted, all up until the release of the Final Cut. In which Rick Wright has been let out of the group, and didn't perform at all in the album. The Final Cut was almost completely done by Roger and is practically a solo album released under the Pink Floyd name. A constant remained in Waters music, the death of his father in World War II. This is portraited in The Wall, and the Final Cut, as well as indivisual songs throught his music career. Most of Waters music is a dark melodrmatic sound, he is one of the few musicians to keep a cloudy image his entire career.
After the Final Cut, Waters left the band, hoping it will break up. But the band kept playing and Waters decided to bring the remaining group members into trail, Waters wanted sole rights of everything Pink Floyd has ever done, he lost the dispute. Although the dispute lasted a while, Pink Floyd kept on going. So did Waters. Roger released several solo albums to stay in the business. The Pros and Con's of Hitchiking, Radio Kaos, and The Wall: Live in Berlin. Which is a live recording of The Wall which Waters played for charity during the week of the Berlin Wall coming down. Later Waters released Amused to Death, it wasn't as much as a success as Waters wanted it to be.
Richard Wright
Richard Wright was Born on July 28th 1945. And at 20 years old, 1965, he joined the group Abdabs. He does many of the sound affects, and some vocals. Richard maily played the keyboard, and the piano, and played most od the Pink Floyd Piano pieces including Great Gig in the Sky, Us and Them, and Summer '68.
During the time Roger was writing The Wall. Wright released his first solo album, Wet Dream. And although sound effects were a major part in Pink Floyd music, Wright was asked to leave during the last part of The Wall's recording session. And didn't play anything on The Final Cut. During the time he was out of Pink Floyd he joined with a group named Zee. The only album released was Identity. After Roger left the band, Wright was hired in as a session musician for A momentary Lapse of Reason, and played at all the tour shows, including Delicate Sounds of Thunder. He officially rejoined the group during the recording of The Division Bell. Wright played in P-U-L-S-E.
Nick Mason
Nicholas Berkeley Mason was born on January 27, 1945. He, like Roger Waters, joined the group in 1965 when it was called The Abdabs. The drummer for Pink Floyd is the only member to appear in every album that was released. He does little writing for the group, but has released two solo albums, Profiles, and Ficticious Sports. Besides playing drums for Pink Floyd, he is a car collector, he owns cars like Ferrari 250 GTO, F40 and 246 GTS Dino, Bugatti 35B, Alfa 2300, and Maserati 250F. He attends many car shows and does a little racing. He has currenlty released a book on cars.
Nick just did an interview with Jay Leno to promote his book, and he denies any new releases for himself or for Pink Floyd.
Syd Barrett
Born on January 6, 1946. Roger Keith Barrett was born and raised in Cambridge England, where he still lives. He was givin the nickname "Syd" as a youngster, and it stuck with him as he grew up. In his late teens, he started producing music. He was an originating member of The Abdabs, The T-Sets, and other names. He worked with people like Bob Close, Roger Waters, Nack mason, and Richard Wright. When Close left the band. Syd renamed the group Pink Floyd, named after two bluesman he admired. Pink Andererson, and Floyd Council. Syd wrote almost everything for "The Pink Floyd" (later renamed just "Pink Floyd"), he played guitar and wrote the music as well. When The Pink Floyd released two sets of singles (Arnold Layne, Candy and the Currant Bun; See Emily Play, The ScareCrow), Syd got heavily into drugs, under the pressure of his fame. After the success of the singles, Syd wrote most of Pipers at the Gates of Dawn. And started to write Suacerful of Secrets. But one night, on the way to a performance, the other members decided not to pick up Barrett becuase of his heavy drug addiction and unpredictability. To cover for Barrett was David Gilmour. Syd had only three tracks on Suacerful of Secrets, and the rest were Waters tracks. Barrett agreed to the permanant split of him and the group. After he left Pink Floyd, he recorded seperate solo Albums, there was The Madcap Lauphs, The Peel Session, and Opel.
After Pink Floyd's great success with Darkside of the Moon, Syd went to check up on his friends in the group Pink Floyd. He showed up at a Recording session of Wish You Were Here. At first nobody recognized Syd, but after a while they realized who it was and they welcomed him. Although Syd didn't play at the session, the album was about him, a thank you recording for his help in there early career. Syd is now a schizophrenic, and resides with his Aunt in Cambridge. He now carries a low profile live on, and is rarely seen. The money he made during the early Floyd days was enough to support his low key.
